Answer
A. Rf (Retention Factor) is a measure of the distance a substance has travelled in relation to the distance traveled by the solvent (in this case, the water). To calculate Rf, you divide the distance traveled by the substance by the distance traveled by the solvent. So, in this case, the Rf would be 2.6cm ÷ 6.3cm = 0.24.
B. To find the distance traveled by the purple dye, you multiply the Rf by the distance traveled by the solvent. So, in this case, the distance traveled by the purple dye would be 0.58 x 14cm = 8.25cm.
C. To find the distance traveled by the orange dye, you multiply the Rf by the distance traveled by the solvent. So, in this case, the distance traveled by the orange dye would be 0.37 x 15.6cm = 5.76cm.
